About the Groomer

Sharon Malachi is a dog groomer, petsitter, and dog education consultant, who creates positive health, happy dogs, and happy clients.  Sharon is a Washington, DC native with a “can do”  attitude,  a daring spirit, and passion for butterflies, music, the environment, world travel, triathlons, kettlebells  and adventure.  She has  a sweet tooth for ice cream, brownies, cupcakes, and apple pie.  Thai and Mexican cuisine are some of her favorites.  She loves to shop at Trader Joe’s and Target.

Sharon grew up in a family that always owned non-shedding  dogs that needed grooming.   Her fondest memories are of the dogs disappearing for several hours and returning home transformed.  She marveled at how good they looked and smelled.  She thought the process was amazing, magical, and transforming.

After graduation from the University of Delaware with a B.S. in Animal Science, Sharon traveled to South Africa to work with the Ligwalawala Lion Project where she tracked and studied lions relocated from a national park.  That experience led her to a position as an animal nutrition intern at Disney World’s Animal Kingdom where she developed diets for over 1,000 animals.  Her internship transitioned into a new position as an animal education facilitator on marine life and conservation for the Living Seas Aquarium at Disney”s Epcot Center.

Having spent two years with Disney, she returned to her hometown Washington, DC, a city that has the perfect mix of everything: art, music, food, family, friends, and career opportunities.  The first place she worked was  Student Conservation Association as a DC Urban Tree House Education Coordinator.  Her new gig allowed her to teach environmental education to K-12 students at DC public and charter schools.  While working here, Sharon took inventory of her previous employment experiences and realized she was happiest when working hands on with animals.  That was her “aha” moment when she decided to take a leap of faith and pursue her passion for dog care.

The first stop on her dog care journey was Veterinary Holistic Care in Bethesda, Maryland,  where she served as Jill of many trades:  receptionist, veterinary technician, and dog bather.  That’s where she discovered an opportunity  to work part-time and learn dog grooming at Cleverdog in Silver Spring, Maryland.  She parlayed her relationship with Cleverdog’s master groomer Donna Cleverdon into a full-time apprenticeship.  Her apprenticeship gave birth to her current career as a dog groomer, petsitter, and dog education consultant.  Most recently she’s been the groom manager at Happy Paws in Washington, DC and Dogma in Arlington, VA.  Sharon is excited to put her years of experience and love of dog grooming in action on the road with DC Dog Grooming.  She enjoys providing grooming services  for your dog with patience, kindness and love, treating each dog as her own.

FAQ

How much do our services cost ?

The cost of grooming varies according to a number of factors including : Breed of dog, Size/weight of dog, Type, length and condition of coat. Groom style, Temperament, Time it takes to complete the groom

Minimum Service Call: $75

How often should my pet be groomed?

On average, dogs should be groomed every 4-6 weeks.  However that depends your dogs breed, coat type, length of coat, and how often you brush at home.  Some dogs can be regularly groomed on a 8 week schedule.

How will I know what time you will arrive?

I will give an open window of 1-2 hours for arrival.  If I am unable to arrive in that window, I will let you know immediately.

Do I need to be home for you to groom my dog?

For the first few times, yes.  When you and your dog feel comfortable with me, we can make arrangements to have your dog groomed when you are not home.

Do I, as the owner, need to do anything before you arrive?

No, we will do all the work for you!  Just sit back and relax. In order to ensure the most comfortable appointment, please make sure that your dog has taken care of all bathroom needs before we arrive.

How long will it take for you to groom my dog?

Depending on the size of the dog, coat type, and complexity of the groom, the groom can take anywhere between 1-3 hours max.  We will never rush your appointment to get to the next appointment, but we do our best to get your dogs groomed in a safe and efficient manner.

Why don't you offer teeth brushing?

We believe dental care is a daily habit.  It would not be honest or fair if we charged you extra to brush your dogs teeth once ever 4-8 weeks.  It will make no difference.  Just ask your dentist if it would be ok to brush your teeth so infrequently.  You would not have healthy teeth.  Please discuss dental care with your veterinarian.

Do you offer Flea Baths?

We do not provide flea baths.  Dogs must be treated for fleas by their veterinarian before service.

What if the client needs to cancel an appointment?

No problem.  Please give us 24 hours notice.  If you do not call or we show up and you are not home, there will be a  fee, which must be paid prior to your next appointment.

What if DC Dog Grooming needs to cancel an appointment?

On rare occasions, we may need to cancel appointments due to weather conditions, road conditions, equipment or mechanical breakdowns, or personal illness.  We will make every effort to contact you in advance and reschedule your appointment.

Does mobile grooming cost more?

Yes.  Mobile dog grooming with DC Dog Grooming involves experienced and professional service at your door.  We use quality products, state of the art equipment, and provide your dog personalized gentle and loving attention.  Included in the package price is the convenience/service fee.  Mobile grooming is not for everyone.  Only you can decide if the care, quality, attention and convenience are worth the price.

What type of payments do you accept?

All services must be paid at time of service.  We accept Cash, Check, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express.  There is a $50 returned check charge which must be paid before the next appointment.  After that we can only except cash or credit.
